What is a Virtual SIM Card

A virtual SIM card, also known as eSIM, is a SIM built into the device. It works as the physical card we use for making and receiving calls, sending text messages, and navigating the internet. The difference is that the eSIM is built into the device. You cannot remove it from your phone or tablet. Only the newest devices are using the eSIM technology, so maybe you are thinking, why should I change to eSIMs? Here we tell you several reasons:

1) You do not take the risk of damaging the SIM or the slot on your phone. Every time you need to remove the SIM card and manipulate the chip, it could be easy for it to get damaged if you are not careful enough, or even worst, to lose it. With eSIMs, you avoid that problem because they are not removable.

2) It is easier to switch networks. Especially if you travel frequently and need to connect to different networks depending on where you are. eSIMs can be ordered online and activated when you need them. There is no need to wait for the SIM to arrive or search for a place at an airport to buy a local SIM.

3) Dual-SIM is also a possibility. In some devices, you can have up to five virtual SIM cards, so you can temporarily switch from one network to another. It is useful while traveling but also if you want a personal and work phone number. Additionally, you can get the best data plan in one eSIM, and unlimited calls and messages in another, getting the best of different mobile service providers.

4) Use less physical space on the device. Even though eSIMs are called “virtual SIM cards” they are not invisible. They are much smaller than a Nano SIM, exactly 2,5mm by 2,3mm. Besides, some devices do not come with SIM card slots. It means that there is space available for the improvement of other features. For example, manufacturers can increase the battery size. However, where you get the most out of the available space is in the design and manufacture of wearable devices. Smartwatches with eSIMs are smaller and more stylish.

Virtual SIM cards are not standard yet, which means that only the newest devices support eSIMs. Some smartphones that have eSIM are all of Apple’s latest iPhones, Samsung’s Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra, and the wearables Apple Watch Series 3, 4, and 5.
