List of eSIM Supported Phones and How to Check Yours

Most phones made in the last few years support eSIM: every iPhone from the iPhone XS and XR onwards, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer flagships plus the Z Fold and Z Flip, and Google Pixel 4 and newer. The quickest check takes ten seconds: dial *#06# and look for an EID. If you see one, your phone has an eSIM chip. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. And if you only see an IMEI or MEID, don't worry yet: the MEID says nothing about eSIM. This guide shows you how to check your phone, explains MEID vs EID vs IMEI, and lists eSIM phones by brand.

How to check if your phone supports eSIM

You don't need to find your model on a list. These three checks on your own phone are faster and more reliable, because eSIM support can depend on the country your phone was sold in.

1. Dial *#06# and look for an EID

Open your phone app and dial *#06#. On many phones, a screen pops up with your device numbers:

• EID: a long number (32 digits). If it's there, your phone has an eSIM chip.
• IMEI (and on some phones MEID): these identify your phone itself, not the eSIM. Every phone has an IMEI.

2. Check your phone's settings

• iPhone: go to Settings > General > About and scroll down. If you see an EID line, your iPhone supports eSIM (Apple: Find the IMEI and EID on your iPhone). You can also look in Settings > Cellular for an option to add an eSIM.
• Samsung Galaxy: go to Settings > Connections > SIM manager. If you see Add eSIM, your phone supports it (Samsung: Galaxy eSIM).
• Google Pixel: go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. If you can tap Add SIM and then set up an eSIM, you're good (Google: Use dual SIMs on Pixel).
• Other Android phones: open your SIM or mobile network settings and look for an option like Add eSIM or Download a SIM. Menu names differ between brands.

3. Make sure your phone isn't carrier-locked

A phone locked to one carrier can refuse eSIMs from other providers, even if it has an eSIM chip.

• iPhone: go to Settings > General > About. If it says No SIM restrictions next to Carrier Lock, your iPhone is unlocked. If not, only your carrier can unlock it (Apple: Unlock your iPhone for a different carrier).
• Android: there's no single menu on every phone. Ask your carrier if your phone is unlocked, or try a SIM card from another carrier. If it works, your phone is unlocked.

MEID vs EID vs IMEI: which number shows eSIM support?

Your phone can show three similar-looking numbers. Only one of them tells you about eSIM.

• EID (eUICC Identifier): the 32-digit number of the eSIM chip itself. The GSMA, which writes the eSIM standards, defines it as 32 digits long (GSMA SGP.29: EID definition). An EID means your phone has eSIM hardware.
• IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity): a 15-digit number that identifies your phone (IETF RFC 7254: IMEI format). Every mobile phone has one, with or without eSIM. Phones with two SIMs often show two IMEIs. Here's how to check your IMEI.
• MEID (Mobile Equipment Identifier): a 14-digit number that also identifies your phone. It was created for phones on CDMA networks, the older network type some US carriers used (TIA: MEID). On phones that work on both types of network, Apple says the MEID is the first 14 digits of the IMEI (Apple).

Does MEID support eSIM?

The MEID doesn't tell you whether your phone supports eSIM. It's only an ID for the phone hardware, like the IMEI. A phone can show an MEID and an EID at the same time. iPhones, for example, show an IMEI/MEID line and an EID line in Settings. So ignore the MEID and look for the EID.

Is the MEID the same as the EID?

No. The MEID (14 digits) and IMEI (15 digits) identify your phone. The EID (32 digits) identifies the eSIM chip inside it. You can't use your MEID or IMEI to install an eSIM.

It isn't complete: new phones come out all the time, and the same model can differ by country. Always run the checks above on your own phone.

What if your phone doesn't support eSIM?

An eSIM needs a chip inside the phone. A software update can't add one if it isn't there. You still have options:

• Use a physical travel SIM card instead of an eSIM.
• Ask your carrier to unlock your phone if the problem is a carrier lock, not the hardware.
• Use a second phone or tablet that supports eSIM, and share its connection with a hotspot.

1. Choose your plan for the country or region you're visiting. Your QR code comes by email.
2. Install the eSIM on Wi-Fi before you fly. Your home SIM can stay on your phone next to the eSIM.
3. When you land, select the travel eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line.
4. Turn off data roaming on your home line if you don't want roaming charges from your home carrier.

How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?

Does MEID support eSIM?

The MEID has nothing to do with eSIM. It's an ID number for your phone, like the IMEI. To know if your phone supports eSIM, look for an EID instead.

Do iPhones from China or Hong Kong support eSIM?

In China mainland, only iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air support eSIM. In Hong Kong and Macao, newer models like iPhone 16e, iPhone 17 and later support eSIM, but most iPhone 11 to 16 models sold there don't.
