This are 5 top destinations in Puerto Rico:

Old San Juan (San Juan Viejo)

One of the most visited places in Puerto Rico is Old San Juan. Located on the nearby San Juan islet, it is connected by bridges to the main island. Tourists may enjoy walking the streets of the city, with colorful colonial buildings and beautiful churches, like the Metropolitan Cathedral, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Do not miss visiting La Fortaleza, with medieval architecture. One of the best-preserved cities in America, it´s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, being the main attraction of El Fuerte San Felipe del Morro.

El Morro Fort (Fuerte San Felipe del Morro)

El Morro Fort, one of the most important tourist attractions in Puerto Rico, was built by Spanish troops beginning in 1539 and ending over 200 years later. The main purpose of this fortification was to protect the place against enemies coming from the sea. It has six levels, which can be reached through several stairs and tunnels, each of them with marvelous views of the Caribbean Sea. The place exhibits articles and models of ships used during the colonial era. At night, the fort looks fantastic when is lit up.

Castillo de San Cristóbal

Castillo de San Cristobal is the largest Spanish fortress built in America during the colonial era, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Its construction began in 1634 and ended 150 years later, and it was made to protect the city´s eastern gate from land attacks. Five separated units are connected by a large set of tunnels, which makes it easy to move between sections. A legend related to one of the security checkpoints, “Garita del Diablo”, built in 1634, tells that the soldiers frequently disappeared on the night watch. Visit this attractive touristic place, which is a national park.

El Yunque National Forest

El Yunque National Forest is one of the most popular touristic places in Puerto Rico. Outdoor lovers will enjoy the many hiking trails available in the park, from arriving at one of the natural ponds to cool off with a swim, to observing the hundreds of plant and animal species present in the forest. El Yunque National Forest is not the largest (29,000 acres), but it is one of the most biologically diverse, including 50 species of orchids, and the “coqui frog”, which has become very important in Puerto Rican culture.

The US Forestry Service, as the only tropical rainforest in the National System, protects El Yunque National Forest. Begin your visit to the park by getting information at El Portal Tropical Forest Center.

Culebra Island (Isla Culebra)

Culebra is a small island about 17 miles east of Puerto Rico, with an area of 20 square miles, and a low population. Surrounded by a bunch of nearby islands of its own, it has plenty of beautiful beaches and an easy-going environment. Isla Culebra got its name in honor to a Spanish Bishop, San Ildefonso de la Culebra. The island is great for snorkeling, being the best places Playa Tamarindo, Punta Soldado and Punta Melones. A very popular beach is horseshoe-shaped Playa Flamenco, on the north coast, with clear water and white sand. It is bordered by Isla de Culebra National Wild Life Refuge, a US Wildlife, and Fishing Reserve.
