Bucharest, the nation´s capital, is located on the bank of the Dambovita River. Having a combination of medieval places and modern buildings, you will have plenty to see in this busy city, known as the “Paris of the East”. Visit the Romanian Atheneum, with a concert hall; the Patriarch Cathedral; the huge Parliament Palace, home to several governmental offices. Don´t miss Curtea Veche palace, built in 1459 as a residence to Vlad III Dracula; and nearby, enjoy the nightlife in the Lipscani street and district.

Brasov

Brasov is a tourist´s favorite in Romania. Located in the mythical Transylvania region, one of its main attractions is Bran Castle (also known as Dracula´s Castle), built in the 14th century and given as a gift to Queen Mary, to be used as the royal residence, in 1920. It is now a museum open to tourists. You´ll want to visit the Black Church, built between the 14th and 15th centuries, its walls becoming black due to a big fire in 1689. Nearby, check out the Casa Sfatului, a former City Hall now functioning as a museum, and also the historic Sfatului Square.

Sibiu

Sibiu is a cultural city situated in the region of Transylvania, known for its medieval ramparts and towers in ruins, and for its Germanic architecture, dating from the 12th century. A unique place to visit is the Bruckenthal Palace, actually functioning as a museum that holds an art gallery with European paintings, and a library showing over 300,000 books, manuscripts, and magazines. Walk up to the top of the Townhall Tower and enjoy a beautiful view of the Carpathian Mountains. At day´s end, visit the Bridge of Lies, the second cast iron bridge built in Europe, in 1859.

Sighisoara

Sighisoara is a gorgeous medieval town protected by UNESCO since 1999. Founded by Transylvanian Saxons in the 12th century, the town built many defensive towers, for protection against the Ottoman Empire. Nine towers remain, including the iconic Clock Tower. Sighisoara is Vlad Tepes’ birthplace, who ruled Valaquia between 1456 and 1462 and inspired the legend of Dracula. You´ll like to visit the gothic Church on the Hill, from the 15th century, or the church of the Dominican Monastery. Remember, the ticket to enter the Clock Tower gives you access to 3 museums.

Sulina

After visiting castles and palaces, churches and monuments, towers and museums, you may want to relax a bit. The perfect place to do it is the tiny and beautiful town of Sulina. Situated on the Danube´s delta, it is Romania´s easternmost point, having peaceful and marvelous beaches on the Black Sea. Enjoy taking a boat to the old lighthouse, built in 1869.
