Sightseeing in Sweden

Let´s take a look at 5 of the many places worth visiting in Sweden.

Gamla Stan, Stockholm

Gamla Stan is Stockholm´s Old Town, located on the island of Stadsholmen. Visitors can appreciate colorful buildings from the XVII and XVIII centuries. It also harbors the medieval cathedral of Storkyrkan, the Noble Museum, the Royal Coin Cabinet, and the Royal Palace, the official residence of the King. Tourists may also enjoy plenty of pubs, cafes, luxury, and affordable hotels, and dazzling nightlife. On the adjacent island of Riddarholmen, in the main church, concerts are held in the summertime.

Vasa Museum, Stockholm

The Vasa Museum in Stockholm opened in 1990 and harbors the warship of the same name. It is the most popular museum in Scandinavia. The ship, built in the XVII century, sank on its maiden voyage due to weight imbalance. Rescued in 1961 and located on the Djurgarden island, it opened as a museum in 1990 and is visited by close to a million tourists annually.

Photography lovers must visit Fotografiska Stockholm, the world´s most admired photography museum. It shows a model of the ship scale of 1:10 and holds the award “Museum Restaurant of the Year 2017”.

Drottningholm Palace, Lovö

Drottningholm Palace, on the island of Lovö, is one of the best-preserved castles in Sweden. Built-in the 1600s, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Apart from being the King and Queen´s home residence, who occupy the southern wing, the palace is open to the public all year round. Don´t miss the Chinese Pavilion, a building with architecture in French rococo style, and inner decoration in Swedish rococo style, dating from the XVIII century. It is recommended to take the guided tours, to make the most of the visit.

The Göta Canal, Gothenburg to Stockholm

The Göta Canal is one of Sweden´s larger constructions, 190 km in length, from Sjötorp at Lake Vättern to Söderköping on the Baltic Sea, and is part of a waterway 390 km long, from Stockholm to Gothenburg, with a width varying between 7-14 meters, and a depth of about 3 meters.

Passengers’ cruise vessels travel the canal, or you can hire a boat or bring your own, and enjoy a summer afternoon. Alongside the canal, there is a road you can use for walking or riding a bike while watching small boats passing through the 58 locks in use.

Kiruna and The Ice Hotel. Lapland

Kiruna is Sweden´s city closest to the North Pole, in the province of Lapland, Norrbotten County, located above the Arctic Circle. During the summer solstice, the midnight sun can be seen 24 hours a day.

Tourists may enjoy different outdoor adventures, from Arctic dogsled rides to fishing and canoeing in the river Turne. By the way, with ice from this river, frozen most of the year, the world-famous Ice Hotel is built by different artists, who re-create it each year in a new design.
