15 Movies to Get You Through Quarantine

 

Did somebody just say popcorn and snacks and movie time?! Some of you may be quarantining and, frankly, bored to death. With limited activities to do during this time, spending time watching movies is not a bad idea.

We have collected a little bit of everything: travel movies, a romantic comedy, family-friendly animation, zombie apocalypse – just to name a few. Let’s see what is your favorite! 



The 15 Best Quarantine Movies



#1 – About Time (2013)


Do you ever wish you could go back in time? In this story, we will travel through time with Tim Lake the protagonist of a British romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Richard Curtis. In Cornwall, Twenty-one year old Tim Lake lives a happy life with his family even though he does not have a girlfriend.

Tim’s father discloses a secret to his son that the men in his family have always had the ability to travel through time. Tim uses this gift to change what happens and has happened in his own life including his marriage life. 


#2 – La La Land (2016)


A love story of an aspiring actress Mia Dolan dreaming to be a Hollywood star and Sebastian Wilder a charming jazz pianist who has a plan of owning a jazz club.

These two met by a passion to pursue their dream and go through many obstacles together in a city known for destroying hopes and breaking hearts. 


#3 – Up (2019)


This uplifting and heartwarming animation is a perfect match for spending quality family time together during the quarantine.

Up is a movie about a beautiful unlikely friendship between 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen and a stowaway Boy Scout named Russell. They are on their journey in Carl’s floating house with thousands of balloons heading to Paradise Falls – Carl’s lifelong dream destination. 


#4 – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)


This movie, a classic and iconic itself, has fulfilled a dream of sweet-toothed kids, and adults around the world. When Charlie Bucket, a young boy from a poor but loving family, wins a free tour of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory by finding a fifth golden lucky ticket in a chocolate bar.

A journey of surprise and fantasy seems to lie ahead waiting for Charlie and four other children, however, only one kid gets to win the grand prize!


#5 – Cast Away (2000)


Self-isolation? Cast Away was released in late December 2000. Leading by Tom Hank, this is one of the most memorable films in his career. Chuck Noland (Tom Hank), a FedEx operations executive finds himself alone on the shores of an uninhabited island after his plane crashes into the ocean.

Out of nowhere and zero human contact, through physical and emotional endurance, he has to survive to return to a woman he loves. 


#6 – The Platform (2020)


El Hoyo (Spanish) or the Platform is a science-fiction/horror movie from Spain. Ranking on Netflix’s top ten list after the movie released in several counties, if you have not seen it yet, you might want to check it out! The film tells a story about a mysterious vertical prison where each cement cell has a rectangular hole in the center.

There are two inmates for each cell, it turns out, every day the platform descends from the top carrying a plentiful meal, stopping at each level. The upper levels are fed, but what about the lower levels? How many cells are there? Where does it end?


#7 – Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)


Set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where humanity is corrupted and the survivors are fighting over the necessities, gasoline, and water. Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) was once a cop and road warrior.

He is forcibly caught by a group of scavengers called the War Boys, commanded by the Immortal Joe and assigned to be a blood donor for Nux, a sick War Boy. On the other side, Imperator Furiosa is struggling to escape to her homeland with Joe’s women selected to breed hidden in an armored War Rig truck. Max then teams up with Imperator Furiosa, in an attempt to be free, the deadly thrill ride begins. 


#8 – A Perfect Day (2015)


During this quarantine, this is a chance for you to spend 2 hours following 1 day of humanitarian aid workers during the Yugoslav Wars. Amid the conflict of the war zone, the aid workers typically operate in front line conditions, helping directly and indirectly to the people in need.

They negotiate with an armed group, communicate with the locals, as well as other organizations within the same area. With a combination of comedy and drama, this movie ironically portrays the daily life of humanitarian workers in an interesting and ridiculous way. It simply started as a group of aid workers trying to retrieve a corpse from a village well. Will they make it? 


#9 – A Quiet Place (2018)


When the world is full of invaders hunting every noise they can hear. Humans are being killed in a split second if they make a sound.

A family has managed to escape the monsters and have survived for over a year hiding in silence. One night, the table has turned and the family can be heard again!


#10 – Ozark ( 2017-present)


The Byrdes is an ordinary family of four based in Chicago. Just like every other family, teenage siblings are fighting all the time, parents are having a conversation at breakfast, etc. Therefore, Maty Byrde, a father who works as a financial advisor at the same time laundering money for the second largest drug cartel in Mexico.

Marty has to relocate his family to a summer resort community in the Missouri Ozarks, where he promises that money-laundering is easy and he can pay off a debt to the cartel. 


#11 – Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer (2019)


During this quarantine, we are going to be an internet detective. Netflix’s true-crime documentary, Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer reveals a story about a group of Facebook sleuths trying to track down Luka Magnotta.

An international manhunt happened after a Canadian killer posted a graphic video online in 2010 showing himself killing two kittens. This three parts series tells the story of one of Canada’s most infamous crimes. 


#12 – Whiplash (2014)


Andrew Neiman is a nineteen-year-old jazz student at the Shaffer Conservatory in New York. He is an ambitious and talented jazz drummer with one desire to pursue greatness. Meanwhile, Terence Fletcher, a jazz conductor who is also known for his uniquely brutal teaching method.

Terence Fletcher later discovers Andrew’s talent and asks him to join as a core drummer of his band. After a chair hurls across the room, Andrew starts to realize he is caught up in the middle of anger and ambition. 


#13 – Train to Busan (2016)


Speaking of the outbreak, we have seen many movies about a zombie apocalypse. This one horror-thriller is a masterpiece from South Korean. Train to Busan, directed by Yeon Sang-hoa,  is a story set mostly on a KTX fast train.

Following the journey of a workaholic father, Sok-woo, and his daughter, Soo-an, amidst the virus outbreak, each train carriage is filled with flesh-eaters. Where hope seems to be the destination in Busan, we will travel through a countrywide viral outbreak with a group of passengers that are battling not only the zombies but also human selfishness. 


#14 – Arrival (2016)


One day, in twelve different locations around the world, mysterious alien crafts have been reported touching down. Linguistics professor Louise Banks (Amy Adams) works with the US military team at one of the landing sites in Montana.

The arrival of these extraterrestrials will bring friends or enemies? As a story develops, Dr. Banks tries to decipher and communicate with them through regular meetings and their written language. 


#15 – The Martian (2015)


This one is a good choice if you needed a change of scenery. Buckle up buckaroos, we are leaving the planet! On the desert red landscape of the planet Mars, the Hermes, a group of the astronauts is hit by an unpredicted space-storm.

They have to abort their mission and return to the Earth, leaving one of their colleagues behind as he disappeared in the storm presuming dead. However, Mark Watney has survived and realized he is stranded alone as a Martian.

With only limited resources, Watney uses his ingenious skills as a botanist managing to survive. As his survival story unfolds and Mark Watney is proved alive. The world comes up together with one rescue mission, to bring him home.
