Sightseeing

These are 5 of the top sites to visit in the Philippines:

Boracay

Despite its small size, Boracay Island features a great variety of wonderful beaches. Located in the west Visayas region, the island welcomes visitors, not only to sunny and quiet beaches, but also to nice resorts, bars, and restaurants. Visit Bulabog Beach, where you can watch the sunrise and kitesurf activities.

White Beach, with real white sand and plenty of palm trees. Puka Shell Beach is nice to relax in the sun enjoying refreshing beverages. It would be fun to take a trip to Mount Luho, the island´s highest peak, standing 100 m, and offering panoramic sights from its viewing deck.

Bohol

The island of Bohol, located in the central Visayas region, offers visitors a variety of attractions. Bilar is an amazing man-made forest, 2 Km thick, planted in the 1950s with Mahogany. Following the forest road, you will get to a curious landscape: The Chocolate Hills, a conical geological formation that takes chocolate color when the foliage dries out.

Visit the colonial Baclayon Church, founded in 1596. Take the Loboc River Cruise, featuring a floating restaurant with local dishes. You may find in Bohol the tiny (and not less curious) Tarsier primate, a nocturnal and insectivorous mammal 15 cm long.

Cebu

The island of Cebu, in the central Visayas, is ready to receive visitors who, not only are looking for nice and sunny beaches to relax or practice aquatic activities but also tourists interested in the historical and cultural backgrounds of the island and its capital, the city of Cebu.

Visit the Santo Niño Basilica, the oldest church in the country, built in the 16th century. The Cebu Taoist Temple, built in 1972, is open to all visitors. The Yap-San Diego Museum, from the 17th century, is a heritage site, featuring works of art and handmade furniture.

Some of the best sea waters for diving and snorkeling in the Philippines surround the island of Cebu. It is fantastic to get close to a whale shark and a huge sea turtle. Do not miss the marvelous site of the millenary Cebu´s sea caves.

Vigan

The colonial city of Vigan, located in the Luzon region, in front of the South China Sea, has been protected by UNESCO since 1999, as one of the best-preserved cities in Asia. The city welcomes visitors to plenty of museums and historic sites and invites them to walk the streets and admire its original architecture.

Check out ancestral Calle Crisologo, with beautiful Spanish structures. The Metropolitan Cathedral is a great place to visit, founded in 1641 and showing baroque style. Do not miss the Saint Augustine Parish Church -also known as Bantay Church- and its famous bell tower.

Manila

Manila, the Philippines’ capital, is located on the island of Luzon, bordering Manila Bay. It is the principal intellectual, commercial, and industrial center of the country, therefore, a very busy city. Old Manila is home to Intramuros, a defense citadel housing San Agustin Church and Santiago Fort, both from the 16th century.

Near Intramuros, you may find the National Museum of the Philippines, a natural history museum established in 1901. Visit Rizal Park, a historic site, where the Philippines declared its independence in 1946.

Do not miss taking a ride in one of the profusely decorated jeepneys, a popular form of transportation and a cultural symbol of the Philippines.
