Sightseeing

Bern

Bern, the fantastic country´s capital, situated by the iconic Aare River, was founded in 1191 and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, due to its well-preserved Altstadt (Old City) of medieval architecture. The city derives its name (bear) from the first animal hunted by its founder, duke Berthold V. There have been bears in Berna since the 16th century, and visitors may watch them in a free-to-air, 6,000 square meter pit (Barenpark).

Go up to the top of the city´s Cathedral (100 m), and enjoy the panoramic view. Visit the Historic Museum, resembling castles from the 15th and 16th centuries, or the house where Albert Einstein once lived, now a museum. Don´t miss exploring Krangasse commercial street, with 6 km. of side-by-side shops.

The Matterhorn

The Matterhorn or Mont Cervin, located on the border with Italy, is probably the most famous mountain in the Alps. Stands at 4,478 meters (the 5th in height), and it´s shaped like a pyramid, with four steep sides. On the 14th of July, 1865, four of the seven climbers to reach the top for the first time, lost their lives in the descent, when one of them slipped.

Find the best views of the Matterhorn from the town of Zermatt, situated at the foot of the mountain. The place is also nice, in the summer, for hiking, biking, or crossing on foot the longest suspension bridge in the world. In the winter, the area is a skier’s paradise.

Jungfraujoch: The Top of Europe

“The top of Europe”, as the mountain port of Jungfraujoch is commonly known, located within the area of Jungfrau-Aletsch, holds an atmospheric investigation station – Global Atmosphere Watch – and is protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Take the Junfraubahn, and reach the highest train station in Europe (3,454 m).

Cable cars are available to enjoy the breath-taking landscape over the Lauterbrunnen valley. Another place offering extraordinary views is Faulhorn (2,681 m), a nearby mountain situated between Lake Brienz and Grindelwald, also in the Bernese Oberland region. At the village of Grindelwald, you can access the surrounding mountains, skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer.

Interlaken

Interlaken (meaning “between two lakes”: Brienz and Thun), is a popular touristic center in the Bernese Oberland. This town is the main transport gateway to the surroundings, featuring cable cars and mountain railways; and the nearby peaks Eiger and Monch offer tourists the opportunity for hiking and climbing.

Visit Hoheweg Boulevard and enjoy the fantastic vistas of the mountains. Take a look at the beautiful English and Japanese Gardens, and don´t miss the Swiss Chocolate Chalet. A marvelous landscape is shown when you take a cruise around the lakes Brienz and Thun, both fed and evacuated by the Aare River.

Lucerne

Lucerne is a Swiss city loved by tourists all over the world due to the variety of its attractions. A musical and cultural city is home to the Annual International Music Festival, held at the Lucerne Concert Hall, which first opened in 1998, with a capacity of 1,840 spectators. The colorful Alstadt, with well-preserved medieval architecture, is limited to the north with the Museggmauer rampart, built in the 14th century, and showing 9 towers, some of them opened to the public.

A well-known landmark is the Chapel Bridge, built in 1360 and rebuilt in 1994, after being destroyed by a fire. Its name derives from the nearby St. Peter´s Chapel. Must see are the Swiss Transport Museum and the Lion Monument. Don´t miss the marvelous Jesuit Church, built in 1667.
