Sightseeing

These are the 5 top destinations in Taiwan:

Taipei

Plenty of things to do welcome Taipei´s visitors. Famous due to its magnificent street food, the city also offers luxury shops and live night markets; old temples and modern architecture; rapid highways, and colonial roads. Visit the spectacular Longshan Temple, built in the 18th century, destroyed several times by earthquakes and fires, and rebuilt again.

The National Palace Museum holds close to three-quarters of a million pieces of Chinese antiques. Don´t miss the dazzling Shilin Night Market, with the most famous food in town. Of course, go up to the 89th floor of Taipei 101 for the best view all around.

Sun Moon Lake

Located in Yuchi Township, Nantou County, Sun Moon Lake is an outdoors lover’s paradise. Surrounded by mountains and dense vegetation, the area is great for hiking or biking. Take the cable car ride and delight with fantastic views of the lake and nearby original Taiwan towns, or hop a service boat for a quiet trip across Sun Moon and enjoy its gorgeous landscapes.

Several restaurants and bars around the lake please visitors with the most delicious Taiwanese food. It is recommended to stay overnight to appreciate the beauty of sunrise and sunset.

Taroko National Park

One of nine of Taiwan´s national parks is the marvelous Taroko National Park, located in Hualien County. The Liwu River runs through it and it has carved over the years a gorge that is the park´s landmark: the millenary Taroko Gorge.

Covering more than 90,000 hectares, the place offers diverse landscapes, including a chain f 3,000-meter-high mountains, and clear-water rivers like the Shakadang River. A must-see is the Eternal Spring Shrine, rebuilt in 1989 and located over Changchun Falls, that “never stops running”.

Tainan

Located on the southwest coast of Taiwan, Tainan (also a seaport) is considered the oldest city in Taiwan. It was probably founded in the 16th century, by the original inhabitants of the area, who were hunters and fishermen. It houses ancient monuments and ruins interesting enough to check out, and a great number of Buddhist Temples.

Visit Fort Provintia, a beautiful site with a very rich history around, built by the Dutch in the 17th century. Don´t miss sober Confucius Temple, identified as “The First School in Taiwan”. The Chimei Museum is a must-see, with a great variety of categories, from fossils to musical instruments.

Lukang

Lukang is one of the most appealing cities in Taiwan. Located on the west coast, the port was the most important site of commerce and trade in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nowadays, the place offers diverse attractions and wonderful cuisine.

Visit Glass Matsu Temple, the Chinese Goddess of the Sea, or the colorful Longshan Temple, with two impressive granite dragon poles welcoming visitors at the gate. Don´t miss Lukang Old Street, with wonderful and well-preserved architecture. Of course, you´re invited to try its marvelous seafood, like Shrimp balls, or Fried oysters.
