Sightseeing

Here we want to show you the best places to visit in Japan. Check out our top 5:

Mount Fuji

Protected by UNESCO since 2013, beautiful Mount Fuji (inactive volcano), is Japan´s highest mountain (3800 m) and the country´s symbol. It can be seen from Tokyo on a clear day, 100 km away.

Considered sacred from ancient times, Mount Fuji is now a popular tourist destination, and most people climb overnight, getting to the summit early enough to watch the spectacular rising sun. Iconic Mount Fuji appears in Japanese literature and works of art.

Imperial Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan´s capital, is an important administrative, cultural, commercial, and industrial center. The city holds from busy streets and impressive skyscrapers to historic temples and medieval castles, including the Imperial Palace, built in 1457, and turned into the Imperial Family´s residence in 1868.

The palace is not open to the public, but you can wander around the magnificent gardens and bridges nearby, like the famous Nijubashi Bridge. Tokyo´s National Museum, with a collection of archaeological articles, and Tokyo Tower, resembling the Eiffel´s, should be included in your visit.

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is the result of an effort to commemorate the many victims of the August 1945 nuclear attack. The park is visited by a million people each year and has become a symbol of No More Hiroshima.

There, you will find the Peace Memorial Museum, the Memorial Cenotaph, and the remains of the former Industrial Promotion Hall, called the Atomic Bomb Dome after the blast, due to the shape of the top. It was protected by UNESCO in 1996.

Historic Kyoto

The city of Kyoto is one of Japan’s most attractive tourist locations. It was the country´s capital for over 1100 years, until 1868. It houses a great number of museums, art galleries, and monuments, including the Imperial Palace, built in the 8th century. Some of these monuments have been protected by UNESCO since 1994.

Do not miss a visit to Nijo Castle, a fortress built in 1626, destroyed by fire and rebuilt twice, and opened to the public in 1940. The Golden Pavilion is a well-preserved structure, from the 14th century; and you will not leave Kyoto without visiting some of the fantastic well-preserved Buddhist Temples.

The Island Shrine of Itsukushima, Miyajima

Located in Hiroshima Bay, Miyajima is a gorgeous island housing a famous (and ancient) Shinto Temple -Itsukushima Shrine- dedicated to the Princess daughters of Susanoo, God of the sea and the storms.

The shrine´s buildings are supported by piles, including the Torii or Shrine Gate, and they seem to emerge from the waters when the tide rises, appearing as if they are floating on water. You may visit the amazing shrine on a day trip, departing from Kyoto, and enjoy the fantastic sunset.
