Malaysia with Singapore or Thailand: which eSIM covers both?
Many trips to Malaysia also take in Singapore, just across the causeway from Johor Bahru, or Thailand, a short trip north from Penang or Langkawi. Our Malaysia plans don't work there. Here's what does:
- South East Asia plan: covers 6 countries: Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam. Most sizes last 30 days (7 days for 1 GB, 60 days for 50 GB) and list 4G/LTE.
- Asia plan: covers 26 countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, China and India. It does not cover Vietnam. Same lengths, 4G/LTE.
- One eSIM per country: a Malaysia plan plus a Singapore or Thailand plan. Our country plans list 5G, but you install two eSIMs and switch lines at the border.
When we checked, our Malaysia plans cost less than the regional plans for the same amount of data, but they last fewer days. The South East Asia plan cost less than the Asia plan for the same data. So for Malaysia plus Singapore or Thailand, the South East Asia plan is usually the simpler pick. Take the Asia plan if your trip also goes to Japan, South Korea, China or India.

Local Malaysian SIM card
Malaysian operators sell tourist prepaid SIMs at the airport and in their shops. You need to register a prepaid SIM with your passport (MCMC: documents for prepaid SIM registration). Whichever you choose, check three things: that every country on your route is covered, how much you can really use (speed limits and hotspot caps), and whether you can top up.
How much data do you need in Malaysia?
It depends on how you use your phone and how often you're on Wi-Fi. As a rough guide:
- 3 to 5 days: 1 GB to 5 GB for maps, messages and some browsing.
- 7 to 15 days: 10 GB to 20 GB, enough for social media, photos and some video calls.
- 15 to 30 days: 20 GB to 50 GB, or more if you stream or work online.

Where you'll use your eSIM in Malaysia
Here are five places worth a stop, with a tip for each.
Kuala Lumpur
The capital is the place to start. See the Petronas Twin Towers, the National Mosque and the Islamic Arts Museum, then head to Central Market and Chinatown for food. Grab is an easy way to get around, and it needs data.
George Town, Penang
The capital of Penang is known for street food, street art and heritage shophouses. Together with Melaka, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008 (Tourism Malaysia). From Penang, Thailand is close, so it's a common place to start or end a cross-border trip.
Perhentian Islands
Off the northeast coast, the two main islands are Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil. People come for the clear water, snorkelling and diving. Signal on small islands can be patchy, so download offline maps and your boat details before you go.
Tioman Island
Off the east coast in the South China Sea, with beaches, coral reefs and jungle trails to waterfalls. Plan around the northeast monsoon: on the east coast, November, December and January are the wettest months (MetMalaysia: Malaysia's climate).
Redang Island
Also off the east coast, known for white sand, clear blue water and diving. The same monsoon applies, so check the season before you book.
Is your phone compatible?
Your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked. Dial *#06#: if you see an EID number, your phone supports eSIM.
