Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang is the country´s unofficial tourist capital, is home to over 50 Buddhist temples, and is the principal religious center in Laos. Situated north of Laos, and where the rivers Mekong and Nam Khan meet, Luang Prabang was the first country´s capital, until 1975.
A must-see in town is the ceremony of Alms Giving, or Tak Bat, where hundreds of monks walk in silence all over Luang Prabang, collecting their daily alms from devotees. Wat Xieng Thong, from the 16th century, is one of the most important samples of religion and art. Luang Prabang has been protected by UNESCO since 1995.
Vientiane
Vientiane, the country´s capital and largest city in Laos, is home to a busy international airport. In this historic city, you will find a mixture of French colonial architecture with several ancient Buddhist temples and museums, all worth visiting.
Temple Pha That Luang, from the 16th century, is a golden stupa considered a national symbol, believed to contain relics of Buddha; Wat Sisaket, from the 19th century, holds thousands of small buddhas; Wat Si Muang, built in the 16th century, shows a statue of King Sisavang Vong, standing in front.
At sunset, enjoy a leisurely walk along the Mekong River and check out the riverside markets.
Vang Vieng
Vang Vieng is a great tourist destination, packed with hotels and all sorts of accommodations, situated by Nam Song River, and close to plenty of interesting places to check out, such as the well-known Blue Lagoon.
Adventure-seekers are welcome to the exciting river tubing, where you can float down the river on a rubber boat, and stop at the various riverside restaurants along the way. Take a leisure walk to the beautiful Kaeng Nyui Waterfalls (30m) and visit the historic Wat Kang and Wat That Buddhist Temples.
Phonsavan
Having a great climate all year-round, Phonsavan, the capital of Xieng Khouang Province, holds beautiful scenery, with pine forests, undulating hills -from where gets its name, “Hills of Paradise”- and fantastic cascading waterfalls, which you may enjoy trekking around town.
Phonsavan was built in the mid-1970s, to replace the old town, destroyed during the Laos civil war. But Phonsavan´s main attraction is an archeological site -The Plain of Jars- consisting of thousands of jar-like structures, believed to be used as graves, or as rice wine storage.
The city is home to Xieng Khouang´s airport.
Si Phan Don
Si Phan Don is a very interesting tourist site with a charming slow life. Its name means Four Thousand Islands and is related to a population of islands set along the Mekong River. During the annual Mekong River flooding, about half of these islands stay submerged.
At Don Khon, you may see the remains of the first Laos railway, opened in 1893 to transport freight and passengers, and operating until the 1940s. Fresh-water Irrawaddy dolphins -in danger of extinction- are a must-see off the coast of Si Phan Don.
