Why Is My Data Not Working?
Once you get your first smartphone, you realize there is no much you can do without mobile data. We use our mobile data to communicate, work, and entertain ourselves. We would not be able to send a WhatsApp message or an e-mail without data or watch videos and movies.
Of course, if we have the opportunity of connecting on Wi-Fi at home or work, it is an advantage. However, what happens if we need to use our data, but we realize that it is not working properly? Probably your first move is to panic until you find a Wi-Fi connection or some other phone to use.
Well, on the bright side, this big problem has easy solutions.
Continue reading because we will detail the alternatives available to fix your data issue, so it will not be inconvenient anymore.
Mobile Data Issues
Having trouble connecting with our mobile data could mean have an instant headache. We are so connected nowadays that we cannot do almost anything without using the internet.
If you are having connecting problems, the first thing you need to do is to check if your mobile data is active. We know it sounds silly, but err is of humans. Maybe you turn it off and forgot to turn it back on. To check this you just need to swipe down the notification bar, look for the cellular data icon, tap there and check that it is on.
Now, if you have already checked but still have issues connecting to the internet and sending messages, you need to learn how to tell that your mobile data is not working properly.
For this, an easy way is to conduct an internet speed test. These kinds of tests will tell you the download and upload speed. If the result is that the speed is extremely low (according to the rates provided by your network), it means you have a connection problem even if your phone says that the data is working.
However, if your mobile data stops working or is running too slow, you can do several things to have it back.
Let’s read about some quick tips that can help you with this problem:
Start checking if you have reached your data limit
Sometimes, we can forget that we are not on a Wi-Fi connection, and download apps, watch videos, and listen to music without thinking about our data limit. Of course, these activities consume lots of mobile data. One possible reason why your data is not working is that you consumed all the data that your plan provides either daily, weekly, or monthly.
Some mobile companies send a message to let you know that you are reaching your data limit, others let you know that when you already ran out of data. However, if you did not receive a message of any kind, here you have the steps to find out how much data have you used:
- Go to the “Settings” option on your phone.
- Tap on “Data Usage“. There you will find the cellular data usage.
- In that option, you can check which apps consume most of the data and set restrictions if necessary.
If you have an unlimited plan or you found out that this is not your problem, let’s read the other solutions available:
Restart your mobile phone or turn on the Airplane mode
As simple as it seems, restarting your cell phone can help you on fixing your connection problems. When it turns on again, make sure the data is active and try browsing again.
Another similar solution that has helped many users is to turn on airplane mode for a few seconds. Here we show you how to do it if you do not remember how:
- Go to “Settings“, and then tap on “Wireless & Networks“. Move the Airplane Mode switch on, wait a few seconds and turn it off. You can also find the option if you swipe down the notification bar.
After doing this, your cellular data should work properly.
Check if you are using the right mobile network
The different network types (4G, 3G, 2G), work differently for every cell phone. You need to be sure that your phone is using the correct connectivity. If it is not using the correct one, your mobile data may run slower than it should.
Another thing we need to remember is that the speed may vary depending on the coverage area, so you could also check the coverage map of your operator to see if there is a good connection in the area where you are.
It is easy to check to which mobile network you are connected:
- Go to “Settings“, tap on “Wireless & Networks“, and then on “Cellular Networks“.
- There is an option called “Preferred Network Type“, tap on it.
- Your phone may have the auto option, where it will switch automatically from 4G to 3G or 2G, according to the area where you are.
- If it does not have that option, it should show you the recommended network for your phone.
If it still does not work, we have one more alternative for you:
Re-Insert your SIM Card
Many connection problems, not only data problems, can be solved by re-inserting your SIM card. Of course that this takes more time than the other solutions. However, if you have already tried the previous alternatives, and they did not work, you could try this last option.
You just need to turn off your phone, remove carefully your SIM card and wait for around 30 seconds. Then re-insert it and turn the cellphone on.
After that, wait until it has fully started, check that your mobile data is on and try to see if the connection issue has been fixed.
Problems with data performance are more common than we think, and they can be caused by different things. However, most of the time the tips we gave you are enough to have your cellular data back and working!
