Piton de la Fournaise

Piton de la Fournaise is an active volcano standing 2632 m, situated in Réunion National Park. The park, established in 2007, has been protected by UNESCO since 2010 and covers about 40% of the island’s area.

It shows exceptional biodiversity, including endemic species of plants not found elsewhere. Driving up to Pas de Bellecombe’s viewpoint, you will enjoy fantastic views over the craters. An 18 km trail leads to the top of the mountain, and you will have the thrilling sensation of walking on recent lava. The volcano is one the most active hot spots on earth, having its last eruption in September 2022.

Cultural festivals

La Réunion island is considered a cultural and ethnic melting pot due to the arrival of people from all over the world in the last 400 years. Get to know the island’s multicultural background, called Creole (to be understood as local), by visiting religious venues and museums.

The island’s festivals include Dipavali, a major Hindu event representing the victory of light over darkness (November). Chinese Guan Di festival lasts two days, showing a parade of fantastical creatures and offering delicious Chinese dishes (July or August).

Witness an unforgettable event: a Walk on Fire, performed by the Tamul community from southern India, to honor Goddess Pandialé (December-January).

Cirque de Cilaos

Cirque de Mafate, Cirque de Salazie, and Cirque de Cilaos are three natural formations surrounding the Piton de Neiges. Of the three, Cirque de Cilaos is the most accessible and popular tourist site.

The community of Cilaos and the majestic cirque are a nature lover’s paradise, with exuberant forests, towering ramparts, and waterfalls. The scenery is beautiful.

From Saint Louis, take the winding road N5 towards Cilaos, a distant 30 km, and stop at a pleasant café to enjoy the fantastic views of the peaks. Cilaos, offering restaurants and hotels, may be used as a departing point to explore the surroundings.

Sunbathe and diving

One of the most popular places in Réunion is the community of Saint-Pierre, situated southeast of the island. The place is home to fantastic beaches, ideal for sunbathing and relaxing.

Grand Anse Bay and Grand Anse Beach welcome you to enjoy white sand beaches, crystal waters, gorgeous waterfalls, and a small palm forest. This attractive site offers a relaxing picnic and barbecue area, perfect for a tranquil day with the family.

If you prefer adventure, diving into the pristine waters of the Indian Ocean is an activity you don’t want to miss. The Natural Marine Reserve protects the island’s underwater ecosystem and the diverse ocean wildlife.

Go hiking

Réunion Island is a beautiful destination for hiking and mountain climbing. The island is one of the best regions on the planet to practice these activities, holding about 900 km of marked trails with fantastic scenery.

For long-distance hikers, Piton de la Fournaise offers a six hour-walk leading to the top of the mountain. Check out the local tourist office for important information before you start hiking.

Make sure to bring your mountain boots, some food, and water. An early start is best before the clouds hide the beautiful landscapes.
