Sightseeing
Let´s take a look at five visitors destinations in Slovakia:
Bratislava
The nation´s capital is alongside the Danube River, close to the border with Austria and Hungary. Visitors may enjoy visiting the Bratislava Castle on top of a hill, built in the 15th century, destroyed by a fire in 1811, and later reconstructed; or the medieval Devin Castle, dating from the 13th century. Don´t miss visiting the marvelous St. Martin´s Cathedral, built in 1221 and located under the Bratislava Castle. Try the fantastic bunch of bars, restaurants, and cafes of the city, or jump to nearby Budapest and Vienna.
Orava Castle
Situated on a high rock, in the village of Oravski Podzamok, and built-in 1241, the Orava Castle is considered one of the most beautiful castles in Slovakia. Its ownership has changed the design over the years, from an original Romanesque and Gothic style to a Renaissance and Neo-Gothic structure. After burning down in 1800, it was no longer used as a residence. To find a use for the historical construction, a regional museum was founded in the castle, opening the first exhibition in 1868. Nowadays, the Orava museum is open to the public.
High Tatras
If you are looking for great outdoor activities, the National Park High Tatras is the place to visit. Situated at the border between Slovakia and Poland, these mountains are the tallest of the Carpathians (Gerlachonsky Peak, 2655 m). Ideal for hiking in the summer, it also attracts mountain climbers in the winter due to its alpine weather. Fantastic mountain lakes, unique plants and animals, marvelous clean air, and breathtaking scenery make worth a trip to this natural wonder.
Banska Stiavnika
Banska Stiavnika is a fascinating city situated at the center of a former enormous caldera, created by the collapse of an ancient volcano. Due to the preservation of the medieval town and its historical value, it was designated to be a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, in 1993. Tourists shouldn´t miss visiting beautiful Trinity Square, or the Slovak Open-Air Mining Museum. Several churches and castles are open to the public, in this wealthy city with rich mineral grounds.
Spis Castle
Spis Castle, located on top of a hill, and overlooking the town of Spisske Podhradie, is a destination tourists can´t miss. Built in the 12th century, it is one of the largest castles in central Europe. Originally a property of the king of Hungary, it changed hands over the years and suffered several modifications. The castle was reconstructed in the 15th century. In 1780, a fire burned it down, leaving it in ruins. It was partially rebuilt in the middle of the 20th century and included as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, also in1993. It holds the Spis museum, showing archaeological pieces recovered from its ruins.
